1. George Johnston, an experienced clinical engineer and retired professor from Oregon, USA, arrived in October 2005 in Pristina, Kosovo to begin a 4-month Health Technology Management (HTM) assignment.
2. He mentored and consulted with the Ministry of Health (MoH) HTM leader and the national clinical engineering (CE) group there. He was assisted weekly by a small work group of volunteer HTM experts located world-wide. The Kosovo CE group is currently composed of 30 recently trained CE technicians and engineers working in 6 major hospitals/cities, who report to MoH.
3. This war-torn country of 2 million is geographically small, but its HTM challenges (medical device parts, manuals, training, health technology structure, policy and strategy) are significant, as their health system combats high infant mortality, and chronic and infectious diseases, and virtually no funds for equipment support.
4. GAME - the Global Assistance for Medical Equipment project - is a coalition of interested HTM professionals, including senior members of ACCE, WHO/PAHO, and others. MedShare International is a sponsoring non-profit for the work in Kosovo and elsewhere around the world using the GAME approach.
5. These activities characterize the work of GAME. We communicate regularly with MoH and HTM leaders in these countries through skype, chat, phone, and email, and draw upon the expertise of many HTM professionals around the world to assist.
6. WE NEED YOU to get into the GAME ….. in Kosovo, and beginning in 2008, seven countries in East Africa!
